Skeleton Lake is located in the municipalities of Huntsville and Muskoka Lakes in the District of Muskoka, Ontario.  It is one of the largest and clearest open bodies of water of the Muskoka lakes. With a 9.1 water clarity rating, Skeleton Lake is very well known for its immaculate waters, and being spring fed is a major contributor to the cleanliness and clarity of the lake.  The maximum water depth is 65 metres thus making it one of the deeper of the Muskoka lakes.

A Brief History

Skeleton Lake comes with a unique history. It was given its name more than 125 years ago when local surveyors came across human skeletal remains on the shoreline, and from then on has been known as Skeleton Lake. The lake basin is thought by locals to have been caused by the impact of a meteorite millions of years ago, possibly due to the rounded shape, but this has yet to be proven. Popular for its pristine waters and array of landscapes, this is a truly sought after lake for cottagers and homeowners alike.

Things to Do

Due to the size and openness of the lake, Skeleton Lake makes a great spot for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing and paddle boarding.  Fishing is also a popular sport, year-round. There are two public use islands; The Hog’s Back, which is predominantly rock and used mainly for religious purposes, as well as Anderson’s Island which is larger and is used by tourists and locals for  sightseeing and cliff jumping (use at own risk). Skeleton Lake is also home to a number of summer youth adventure camps, where guests are treated to a multitude of activities on and around the lake. With close proximity to Huntsville and Rosseau there are always water and land based activities nearby.

Fishing

The oxygen-temperature profile indicates that the habitat is optimal for a number of fish species, predominantly lake trout who flourish here. As a result, lake trout are no longer stocked in Skeleton Lake due to the ideal habitat which has allowed the natural reproduction to occur at a very healthy rate. Due to the depth of the lake, though, lake trout tend to prefer the cooler temperatures closer to the bottom which can result in the need for down-riggers to ensure that the bait reaches the needed depth. Bass can be found in the shallower waters. Public boat access is available via Skeleton Lake Road, as well as access from any of the local marinas that service the lake.
